CayenneS V8 twin-turbo diesel at Paris motor show

From autoweek;
“Porsche has confirmed long-running rumors it will add a Cayenne S diesel variant to boost sales and performance potential in the face of increased luxury SUV competition.

The Cayenne S diesel runs the latest evolution of the Audi 4.2-liter V8 diesel engine, shared through the Volkswagen Group family. It’s pictured here for the first time ahead of a world premiere in September at the Paris motor show.

With twin-variable turbochargers and the latest in piezo-valve-guided, common-rail-injection technology, the 90-degree unit kicks out about 377 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque—a substantial increase compared with the existing turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine found in the Cayenne diesel. The S model would slot in as a performance variant above the V6 oil-burner.

According to Porsche’s own performance figures, the added reserves are sufficient to haul the all-wheel-drive Cayenne S diesel to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds and to a top speed of 157 mph. They also help extend towing capacity to about 7,716 pounds.

Equipped with various fuel-saving features, including automatic stop/start, the Cayenne S diesel is estimated to achieve the equivalent of 28.3 mpg (U.S.) on the European cycle.

Porsche says it has worked hard to provide the V8 diesel with a distinctive sound, which it likens to its more traditional V8 gasoline units. This engine also is earmarked to join a face-lifted Panamera lineup in 2013.

The strong torque qualities of the big diesel have also led to a different setup for the Cayenne’s all-wheel-drive system, with torque vectoring to be offered as optional equipment.

The Cayenne S diesel receives the same styling treatment as other V8-powered Cayenne models, along with diesel badges on the front flanks and S identification on the tailgate.

Porsche is yet to reveal when or if the Cayenne S diesel will arrive for the U.S. market. It is planned to head into German showrooms in January 2013 with a sticker price of 77,684 euros, or slightly less than $100,000.”
